Requirements to be fulfilled within the first year: Emily Balch Seminar Quantitative Seminar (or place out with a test)
Requirements to be fulfilled before the start of the senior year: Quantitative and Mathematical Reasoning (QM) Requirement: One unit. All students must take one course which makes significant use of mathematical reasoning and analysis, statistical analysis, quantitative analysis of data or computational modeling. You must demonstrate your readiness, either through your performance on the assessment or through satisfactory completion of the QSem, before taking a QM course.
Language requirement: Two units. For most students, this will mean a year of a single language (e.g. Elementary Russian, Intermediate French, etc.) If you are already beyond the intermediate (that is, the second-year) level, you may take two advanced free-standing semester-long courses in the foreign language(s) in which you are proficient.
Non-native speakers of English may choose to satisfy all or part of this requirement by coursework in English literature. (For this purpose, non-native speakers are normally those who were schooled through secondary school in a language other than English, who identified themselves as non-native speakers to the College Board, and who took the TOEFL exam.)
Approaches to Inquiry: One unit in each of the following four approaches:
1. Scientific Investigation (SI): understanding the natural world by testing hypotheses against observational evidence.
2. Critical Interpretation (CI): critically interpreting works, such as texts, objects, artistic creations and performances, through a process of close-reading.
3. Cross-Cultural Analysis (CC): analyzing the variety of societal systems and patterns of behavior across space.
4. Inquiry into the Past (IP): inquiring into the development and transformation of human experience over time.
Only one course within the major may be used to satisfy the distribution requirements. And no one course can be used to satisfy more than one requirement. Only courses in which you have earned a 2.0 (C) or better can be used to satisfy requirements.
